Dos and Don’ts We Need to Know During the Flood.
Indonesia took a hit. A series of natural disasters have hit Indonesia in early 2021. One of them was flood. Flood is when an area is submerged in water that is not absorbed by the land in large and deep amounts. It happened because of a poorly organized drainage system and rainfall rate was too high at one time. Reported by liputan6.com, as of February 28th, 2021, 285 flood spots have hit Indonesia with many casualties and property damages.
According to the Meteorological, Climatological, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG), bad weather will continue until March 2021. Bad weather is predicted to be experienced by more than 10 provinces in Indonesia, covering most of Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Maluku, East Nusa Tenggara, and Papua. It is feared that this bad weather will bring new floods in several areas and worsen the regions that are still experiencing this disaster. In conclusion, we know floods can happen anytime because of this bad weather, so there are several dos and don’ts we need to know during the flood.
Place valuables such as documents, jewelry, money, electronic things, etc that can be damaged or washed away by flood water flow at a higher place.
Check the drains around your house and make sure there is no trash blocking the flow of water. If there is trash, immediately clean it so that the water can continue to flow and the flood can immediately subside.
To protect our clothes from getting wet because of the flood, we need to wrap it with plastic or something that is waterproof.
Prepare food reserves that are not easily damaged, easy to serve and contain nutrition so that our body can still get nutrients from the food consumed like cereal, instant noodle, instant porridge, etc.
Please pay attention, when the water flood arises too high, quickly ask for help and evacuate to a safe place. Prioritize the safety of ourselves than our stuff.
Swimming is strictly prohibited during a flood because floodwater is filthy and dangerous for the body. Then during a flood, we don’t know clearly the conditions under which we are standing, whether there are drains or holes. Therefore we need to avoid walking in the middle of a flood.
Never distil flood water to drink because the water is already contaminated with things that we don’t know where it came from. It could be water from the dirtiest river near you, or mixed with water from the dirtiest place you’ll ever think.
Basically, water has properties that can conduct electricity, so you shouldn’t touch or be near electrifying objects.
Those were some dos and don’ts during a flood. If possible, it is better not to let flood hit us. For that, we need to raise awareness of the environment around us. For example, not littering, making suitable drains, cleaning drains or rivers around the house. Not only that, as a resident of the city, we can propose better city planning such as planting trees around roads or parks, submitting water absorption areas and so on which aim to help the land absorb stagnant water. Stay safe and stay healthy.
